Floor mats come in a variety of sizes, designs and styles. There is a wide array of entry mats for tracked-in dirt and/or moisture removal as well as numerous types of anti-fatigue mats for use in production, industry and food service applications. Anti-fatigue mats are widely recognized as the most effective ergonomic solution for workers who stand for long periods of time and for workers with multi-task positions. Additionally, matting is the most obvious and significant barrier to slip and fall issues. A Maintex consultant can assist you in deciding which mat choice is appropriate for your needs.

The first impression of a facility starts with the entry and lobby. A clean, well maintained entry delivers a positive impression to visitors and employees alike. The use of matting in a building is recognized both professionally and legally as the most effective defense against cost creating soils. Cleaning industry experts estimate that 80 - 90 % of dirt in a facility is tracked in from the outside, and it costs approximately $500 to remove a pound of that dirt.
Exterior mats are made from synthetic materials such as vinyl, rubber, polypropylene and olefin. Exterior mats are designed to scrape the bulk of dirt and debris from shoe soles and capture the moisture. Interior mats are made from similar fibers as exterior mats and also include natural fibers like cotton or wool. Interior mats are designed to continue cleaning shoes by removing light soil and additional moisture. The ideal mat length allows the average adult to take six to eight three-foot long strides.

Mats should always be placed with safety in mind. Floor mats should be secured against movement and installed so that they do not create a tripping hazard. They should have beveled edges, flat edges or other treatment to prevent the possibility of tripping on the edge. Routine inspection and replacement should occur as mats begin to wear.
Mats need to be cleaned regularly for optimum performance. An unclean mat will actually contribute to additional soil being tracked into a building. Vacuuming dry, loose soil should be scheduled daily. The underside of mats should be cleaned and dried regularly. Periodically, mats should be water extracted for restorative cleaning.
A comprehensive mat program will benefit the safety, appearance and profitability of your facility. Let Maintex help you in planning your matting program.
